A Little Gist On Branding
BRANDING
Choosing
for yourself a brand name
In the world today, there are over 300 million companies
and getting a brand name can be quite difficult.
So, what do you need to know about picking a name?
1.
Select
what type of name you want?
There are 7 different categories of names
and every brand in the world falls within any of them.
i.
Eponymous: These names embody the belief of
the founder. Examples are Adidas, Tesla, Disney
ii.
Descriptive: The name tells exactly what the
company does. E.g. American airlines
iii.
Acronymic: The name is in shortened form from
its full name. Examples are KFC, HSBC,
iv.
Suggestive: There are 3 sub-divisions under
this: Real, Composite, Invented
Real-
They are lifted off the dictionary literally e.g. UBER which literally means
‘An Outstanding Example’
Composite-
They are formed by bringing two words together e.g. Facebook, Tripmaster, Rayban,
Redbull
Invented-
These are names gotten by changing or adding letters for impact. E.g.
Pinterest, Qmax, if not careful with this, the name can start to sound like
pharmaceutical drugs
v.
Associative: The name takes meaning or
relevance from an existing name for its brand. E.g. Amazon- originally is the
name of the largest river in the South America, therefore takes meaning as the
largest selection of books. Another example is Redbull- associates with the
bull like quality such as power and confidence.
vi.
Non- English names: Examples of these names
are Samsung (means 3 stars in Korean), Lego (play well in Danish)
vii.
Abstract names: The names have no intrinsic
meaning but depend on the power of the phonetics to create a strong brand name.
E.g. Rolex, Kodak
